When my good friend Capt. Charlie told me he wanted to spend his 30th birthday in Venice, LA, I have to say that I honestly asked….”Where?!?”

Umm…you mean, like by the oil spill?  Hmmm…Have you looked at prices for Panama perhaps?  Why would you want to leave Miami?  Can’t we just go to the Keys?

Welcome to Venice, LA

He assured me that it was the time of year for BIG yellowfin tuna, and not being one to doubt my trusted friend, I agreed to the excursion since he was, after all, planning his own party.

After blocking the dates, and agreeing to the trip, I finally started doing some research.  The fishing looked incredible.  I could tell by the contour of the nearby shelf off of google earth that the fishing had to be amazing.  Add to that, the giant structure in the middle of the deep blue sea (oil rigs), and I figured the captain was right in his yellowfin vendetta pursuit.

I thought maybe I was just amping myself up after watching some IntoTheBlue on youtube.  This place looked epic!  It did not disappoint.

Capt. Hunter Cabellero of Paradise Outfitters proved to be one of the elite fisherman in the Venice area.  In two days of fishing we caught 50+ yellowfin tuna to about 70 lbs., 50+ amberjack to 99lbs., probably 70-80 blackfin tuna and bonito, a few sharks including a 200+lb.  hammerhead, and a single beautiful gulf red snapper.

Below is a photo journal of our excursion aboard a beautiful custom twin hull vessel.

This beautiful gulf red snapper actually bit just a hook after I lost an amberjack. Great fish – but out of season – he was vented properly and sent home

tagging more tuna

We tagged 7 yellowfin tuna and sent them home the first day after we loaded up on our fill – it was good karma for day 2. This one went crazy as Capt. Charlie through him overboard.

Large mystery fish

Charlie’s large mystery fish was fought for nearly an hour – that large fish will remain a mystery…or maybe we’ll get it Day 2.
