The Clear Lake fishery here has gone through many peaks and valleys during the past 30 years. The lake is coming out of one of those valleys that was caused by the winters of 2005 and 2006. Those two super cold winters brought about water temperatures that dipped into the low 40’s and held there. The massive threadfin shad population that had peaked was decimated as the bottom end of the shad’s survivable temperature range was exceeded and the bulk of the shad died. The huge bass population that was thriving on the shad dropped off as the amount of available food tightened up.

So, where does the lake stand now, 7 years later? Based on my observations, the fishery is past the valley and on the way back up again towards another peak. While the numbers of 2003, 2004, and 2005 are down, one thing has not changed on Clear Lake. When you land 5 keepers, you are going to have 17.5 to 20 pounds. The bodies of our fish are thick and heavy to the point that a fish that would be 2 pounds in another lake will weigh almost 3 here. I don’t know too many bodies of water around the country where you can do that, literally, just a handful.

The bass population has displayed two good years in a row of spawns thanks to higher Spring water levels. These fish are coming through the system and the future is bright! Like all bodies or water and all types of fishing, it changes daily and some days are better than others. We know how to find them, where to find them, the best ways to catch them, and stand ready to really show off Clear Lake to you.
